A Right That Can’t Wait: The Urgent Call to Ingrain the Right to Food in UK Law

In our modern society, where innovative technologies fill our homes, and convenience is at our fingertips, it’s disturbing to acknowledge that millions of our fellow citizens go to bed hungry. As the CEO of Humans MCR, an advocate for the rights and wellbeing of Greater Manchester’s citizens, I feel a pressing duty to echo the growing call for the UK to legally recognise the “Right to Food”.

When we utter the phrase “Right to Food,” it shouldn’t just be an idealistic concept or a point of debate; it should be a fundamental human right. Just as we’ve legislated on rights to privacy, shelter, and life, we must urgently ensure that every UK citizen’s right to sustenance is protected under the law.

Why the Right to Food is Vital

For many, having food on their plate is taken for granted. However, the truth is stark: there are families across the UK deciding between heating their homes or feeding their children. We’re witnessing a rising tide of food banks, with more and more people relying on them for their most basic needs. Recognising the Right to Food legally would provide an essential safety net. It would ensure that no one, regardless of their financial or social circumstances, would ever go hungry in the UK.

The Tangible Benefits of Recognising the Right to Food

Beyond the evident moral imperatives, there are clear practical reasons to make this change. Here’s how society stands to benefit:

1. Reduced Strain on Health Services:
Malnutrition and hunger aren’t just about empty stomachs.
They lead to a range of health problems – both physical and mental. When people can’t feed their bodies, they are more prone to illnesses, leading to more frequent hospital visits. With the NHS already under tremendous pressure, recognising the Right to Food would be an effective preventative measure, reducing the need for treatments associated with malnutrition and its related ailments.

2. Enhanced Productivity and Economic Gains:
A nourished population is a productive one. Children who have access to regular, nutritious meals perform better academically. In turn, well-fed adults are more efficient at work, leading to economic benefits for the entire country.

3. Social Cohesion:
Hunger breeds desperation, which can give rise to anti-social behaviours. By guaranteeing every person’s Right to Food, we can foster a more harmonious society where desperation and associated behaviours are minimised.

The Call to Action

If the moral and practical arguments for the Right to Food are so evident, why isn’t it already law? The sad truth is, unless there’s political will and/or public pressure, legislation moves at a glacial pace. If it doesn’t win votes, it’s unlikely to ever reach the floor of the Commons. This is where we all have a part to play:

  • Organisations: It’s time to align your corporate social responsibility efforts with this cause. Whether it’s supporting local food banks or backing legislative efforts, your influence is crucial.
  • Local Authorities: As the bodies closest to our communities, you can play a pivotal role by lobbying higher tiers of government. It’s essential that food security is embedded within community strategy plans.
  • Politicians: You represent the will of the people. It’s your duty to make the Right to Food a reality in the UK.
  • General Public: Your voice is the most potent weapon. Join campaigns, support local efforts, and make sure that your representatives know where you stand.

Final thoughts

As a society, we’re judged by how we treat our most vulnerable. The pandemic has shown us how fragile our systems can be and how even the basics – like food – can suddenly become scarce.
If there’s anything we should learn from our recent challenges, it’s the importance of proactivity. Let’s not wait for another crisis to remind us of our obligations. Let’s guarantee every UK citizen their fundamental Right to Food. Together, we can build a society where hunger becomes a relic of the past.

Join us at Humans MCR as we champion this cause, because a well-fed nation isn’t just a dream – it’s a right that can’t wait.
