Greater Manchester, often celebrated for its rich history, culture, and innovation, is facing a challenge that stands at odds with its reputation—a growing landscape of food poverty. Despite the region’s accomplishments, we cannot turn a blind eye to the pressing issue of food insecurity that many of our neighbours experience daily.

The Current State of Food Poverty in Greater Manchester

Food poverty isn’t merely about not having food on the table; it’s about not having consistent access to nutritious and adequate food. It’s a multidimensional problem that encompasses physical unavailability, economic inaccessibility, and inappropriate utilisation.

Recent data highlights a concerning increase in the number of families and individuals unable to afford or access sufficient, nutritious food. Several factors contribute to this:

  1. Economic factors: The economic repercussions of austerity, the global pandemic and the cost-of-living emergency have led to job losses, reduced working hours, and business closures. With incomes shrinking for many households and prices rising, purchasing nutritious food has become a luxury rather than a given.
  2. Welfare reforms: Changes and cuts to benefits have left many struggling to make ends meet, forcing difficult choices between paying bills and buying groceries.
  3. Price hikes: The rising costs of living, combined with increasing food prices, have exacerbated the food poverty situation.

It’s worth noting that children are particularly vulnerable. 250,000 children in Greater Manchester are at risk of going to bed hungry. This is not just a statistic—it’s a lived reality.

Humans MCR: Stepping Up to the Challenge

In the face of such dire circumstances, Humans MCR has been working relentlessly to combat food poverty. Our mission is simple: ensure that every individual in Greater Manchester has access to nutritious food, irrespective of their circumstances.

Here’s how we’re making a difference:

  1. Emergency Food Assistance: Recognising the immediate need, Humans MCR has expanded its emergency food parcel service. These parcels are not just about quantity but quality—ensuring recipients get balanced meals based on their choices.
  2. Educational Initiatives: We believe that education is the key to long-term change. Our workshops focus on teaching families how to make nutritious meals on a budget, and reduce food waste.
  3. Partnerships: Our work wouldn’t be possible without the collaboration of local businesses, retailers, and other organisations. By working together, we drive change.
  4. Advocacy: Beyond our direct interventions, we actively advocate for policies that address the root causes of food poverty, ensuring that systemic change is achieved.

Looking Forward

While the road ahead is challenging, the spirit of Greater Manchester is unyielding. Humans MCR envisions a future where no one in our county goes to bed hungry—a future where food poverty and generational food poverty is a thing of the past.

But we cannot do this alone. Every volunteer, every donation, and every word of encouragement brings us closer to our vision.

Let us remember: Greater Manchester’s strength isn’t just in its history or its accomplishments, but in its people. Together, we can and will end generational food poverty.
