Longsight's Little SuperHumans: Supporting Their Community

Humans MCR

November 2023

I want to share with you a heart-warming and inspiring story from the very heart of Longsight, which, it just so happens, is where it all began for Humans MCR.

Longsight, as many of you might be aware, is a close-knit community filled with untapped potential and resilience. While it’s no secret that some in this community face daily challenges, from economic hardships to limited resources, it is also a place teeming with hope, courage, and the determination to make a positive change.

Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with two extraordinary institutions – St John’s Primary School and St Chrisostym’s Primary School. When I was told that these schools had chosen Humans MCR as their charity to support, I was deeply moved – these schools are right in the heart of one of the most deprived areas in the country. However, nothing could prepare me for the warmth and understanding that I would encounter.

Meeting with the School Councils, composed of insightful and empathetic pupils, was truly a moment I will cherish. These young minds grasped the gravity of the challenges their community faces, but more importantly, they understood their role and the difference they could make. The enthusiasm and genuine concern in their questions, their willingness to learn, and their desire to help, made it evident that our future is in capable hands.

During my presentation to the parents, I was equally struck by their offers of support and determination to give back. It’s a testament to their upbringing that the children have such a profound understanding of the world around them.

And understanding, readers, turned into action. These incredible children, supported by their parents and school staff, went on to raise an astounding £3000 made up of cash donations, Easter eggs, Christmas selection boxes, and a variety of ambient food and cupboard essentials. It is gestures like these that make a tangible difference in people’s lives and boost the spirits of everyone involved.

This initiative by St John’s and St Chrisostym’s pupils shows that one is never too young to make a difference. Their actions are a testament to their character, their understanding of the world, and their belief in the power of community.

From all of us at Humans MCR, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to every pupil, parent, teacher, and staff member involved. You’ve not only made a difference in the lives of many but have also inspired others, including myself, with your kindness and generosity.

In times like these, it’s essential to remember the impact a community can have when it comes together. The spirit of Longsight, embodied by these little SuperHumans, is a beacon of hope for all of us.
